woohoo a real silver quarter

I scored at McDonald's today when I got a real silver quarter in change. my meal costs 3.23 and my quarter was worth 3.07. Close enough to be free. I've been searching my change for years and this is the first time I have gotten free silver. Just had to share, it made my day. :yippee::yippee:

I got one too a couple of months ago from my local market. It's hard to believe some are still circulating out there after all these years...

Congrats! I've only found one silver coin in general circulation in the past 5+ years when I spotted a Merc dime in the teller tray. I guess that counts. :emotions16:

Congrats DaisyGirl. :ok:

So far, I had no luck finding any silver quarters in my change. Since I started looking for silver in my change, I only found one silver Merc dime in my change.

Congrats on the silver quarter. I have never gotten one in pocket change though I have seen a few in tellers trays, one of which I was given. I am also one of them sadistic bastards that sometimes searches boxes looking for them and can attest that they are hard to find. I have gotten a couple dimes in change the last few years but they are smaller and easier for people to miss. HH Mark

Thank you, Thank you everyone. I showed friends at work and was still on cloud nine when I got home. I knew the minute that quarter hit my hand it was silver. I looked at the edge and then checked the date. 1964. I need to change my name to Silverbug because I definitely like the feel of silver. Have a terrific weekend!!

Yeah I would change it because silverbugs rule the GIM forums. :ok:

If you change your name you'll never find another piece of silver.:4_1_72:

Congrats on the find. It's been about a year since my last quarter find. Found a dime stuck undert the pressure relief valve on an old canner the other day.

It's funny how this continues to bring such a thrill! I think we'd rather find a silver quarter than a $5 FRN! Congrats Daisy.

"Pocket Prospecting" has earned me exactly 1 War Nickel, 2 Silver Rosies, and 2 Silver Washingtons over the past 25 years. "Bank Mining" has achieved me about 33 Ozt. since I started about 5 months ago - only sifting through about $1000 of Halves.

I keep track via a spreadsheet.

I don't think it is still circulating but through some circumstance has been reintroduced into circulation and probably recently. I'll bet that a large percentage of the population is dumb enough to just spend a junk silver stash that has come their way through inheritance, theft, etc. It's been a while but I was behind some kid (10-12 or so) in at the counter in a convenience store and watched him drop a load of candy on the counter and proceed to pay for it with 90%. I almost freaked but nobody else noticed anything. You know he was raiding some family member's stash.

I ended up with the 90% BTW.

The wife got a 62 Roosevelt dime a couple of months back.

My piggy bank was full and I rolled it up a couple of weeks back, close to $400 in dimes and quarters. Nothing. I don't even look through the pennies and nickles, just roll them and stuff them in a drawer somewhere, probably got better than 50 lbs by now.

Doesn't all this talk of finding Silver belong in the Conspiracy sub-forum? :)

Your right, there is no silver coinage to be found in the wild. Move along folks, nothing to see here. Happy Hunting, I know I am, Mark

I read somewhere the odds of finding a silver Washington quarter are something like 1 in 2 million. 2 million is a lot of quarters to sift through for one measly silver one.

Its all luck of the draw. Last summer a guy told ME he averaged 1 per box, since that is my average for dimes I tried a box and got one, so I tried another box and got another. Then I had 3 skunks in a row and quit, probly done less than 10 boxes since then with maybe 1 or 2 slivers to show for it. They are a rare beast. One of my tellers said he got one in a deposit the other day, he intended to swap it out and keep it but the end of the day it was gone, he had handed it out to someone. HH Mark

Re: woohoo a real silver quarter

I know all of the women at the tills of the drugstore near work, and I've told them all about PM's. So some now collect it when it comes in, and a couple of them save it for me. I've gotten about a canadian dime a week from them, but today one of them gave me 2 canadian quarters in place of my change.

What goes around, comes around. I'm happy with the 80% canadian they have given me over the last year or so, although I did try and tell them that they should be collecting it themselves.

So it is still in minor circulation up here.
